Meta Launches Muse Image — Free AI Image Generator for Instagram and WhatsApp
Meta releases Muse Image, its first AI image generator, free across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta AI. Ranks #2 behind OpenAI.
Quick answer
Meta released Muse Image, its first AI image generation model, available free in the Meta AI app, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It ranks second only to OpenAI's GPT Image 2 in quality benchmarks and can generate images from text, edit photos, render readable text, and even create working QR codes.
Meta Launches Muse Image — Free AI Image Generator for Instagram and WhatsApp
Meta just launched Muse Image, its first dedicated AI image generator, and it’s rolling out free across Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Meta AI app starting today.
What Muse Image Can Do
Muse Image is the second major release from Meta Superintelligence Labs, the division led by Alexandr Wang that launched Muse Spark earlier this year. While Spark handles conversation and reasoning, Muse Image focuses entirely on visual creation.
The standout features go well beyond basic text-to-image generation. Muse Image can render legible text inside images — meaning you can ask it to create an infographic or poster and the words actually come out readable. It can generate functional QR codes from a text prompt. And it can edit specific regions of an existing photo without regenerating the whole thing.
Perhaps most notably, you can @-mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to pull someone’s public photos into a generated image. Want to create an event invitation featuring a friend? Tag their username. Meta says users can opt out of this feature in their settings.
How It Stacks Up
In independent benchmarks from Arena.ai, Muse Image ranks second overall — behind OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 but ahead of Google’s Nano Banana 2, Grok Imagine, and every other image model tested. It holds that #2 position across text-to-image, single-image editing, and multi-image editing categories.
What This Means for You
If you use Instagram, WhatsApp, or the Meta AI app, you now have access to a near-top-tier AI image generator at no cost. That’s a significant shift — most comparable tools from OpenAI and others sit behind paid subscriptions.
Muse Image is available in the US to start, with more countries coming soon. It’s also rolling out to advertisers through Meta’s Advantage+ creative tools, meaning AI-generated product images are about to become far more common in your social feeds.
All generated images include invisible watermarks for safety, and the system blocks content that violates Meta’s terms of service.
