xAI's Grok 4.5 Enters Private Beta With 1.5 Trillion Parameters

Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has begun private beta testing of Grok 4.5 at SpaceX and Tesla. The announcement, made on June 28, introduces what xAI describes as a major leap in capability — built on a 1.5-trillion-parameter V9 foundation model.

What We Know

Grok 4.5 is the latest version of xAI’s AI assistant, previously available as Grok through the X platform. The new model reportedly incorporates training data from Cursor, the popular AI coding platform, suggesting a strong focus on software development tasks.

Musk claims that early internal evaluations show Grok 4.5 performing “close to, perhaps exceeding” Anthropic’s Claude Opus — currently the top-ranked model on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. However, those evaluations were conducted internally at SpaceX and Tesla, not by any independent third party. No public benchmark results exist.

The Bigger Picture

Alongside the Grok 4.5 announcement, xAI revealed an ambitious roadmap: the company plans to release entirely new foundation models, trained from scratch, every single month through the end of 2026. If true, that pace would outstrip every other major AI lab.

This comes as the AI model race intensifies. OpenAI just previewed GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna under government-gated access. Google’s Gemini 3.5 Pro has slipped past its June deadline into July. And Anthropic is navigating its own challenges with US export controls on its Mythos 5 model.

The AI frontier is now a four-way race between OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI — each taking radically different approaches to release strategy and government engagement.

What This Means for You

Right now, nothing changes for everyday users. Grok 4.5 is locked behind closed doors at two Musk companies, with no timeline for public access. You cannot try it, and the performance claims are unverified.

But the signal matters. If xAI delivers on its monthly release cadence, the competitive pressure could drive faster improvements and lower prices across all AI platforms — including the tools you already use like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
