Google Gemini 3.5 Live Translate Brings Real-Time Voice Translation to 70+ Languages

Gemini 3.5 Live Translate launched on June 9, 2026, as a new AI audio model built into the Google Translate app on Android and iOS. It translates spoken language in near real time across more than 70 languages and over 2,000 language combinations. No sign-up is required.

What Makes This Different

Previous translation tools worked in turns: you speak, wait, hear the translation, then the other person speaks. It felt like talking through an intermediary.

Gemini 3.5 Live Translate works as a continuous stream. The model begins translating while the speaker is still talking, staying just a few seconds behind. The result is fluid, natural-sounding audio without the awkward pauses that make translated conversations feel stilted.

More importantly, the model preserves vocal qualities — intonation, pacing, emphasis, and pitch are carried over into the translated speech. A joke still sounds like a joke, not a robotic readout.

The jump in language support is dramatic. The previous version handled just five languages. This release covers 70+, making it useful for travellers, international teams, and multilingual families around the world.

Listening Mode on Android

Android users get an extra feature called listening mode. Hold your phone to your ear like a regular call, and the translated audio streams directly through the earpiece. This is useful when you want a private, discreet translation — at a market, in a meeting, or on the go — without broadcasting the output through your phone speaker.

You can also connect headphones on either platform for a hands-free experience.

Where It Is Available

The consumer app is live globally on Android and iOS right now. Developers can access the model through the Gemini Live API and Google AI Studio, with partner platforms like LiveKit and Pipecat offering pre-built integrations.

For business users, Google Meet integration is in private preview for select enterprise Workspace customers, with a broader rollout planned for the second half of 2026.
