Anthropic Launches Claude for Word, Bringing AI Editing to Microsoft Office

Anthropic has released Claude for Word in public beta, embedding its AI assistant directly inside Microsoft Word as a native sidebar add-in.

What Changed

Until now, using Claude with documents meant copying and pasting text into a chat window or uploading files through the Claude web app. Claude for Word removes that friction entirely. The add-in sits in Word’s sidebar and can read your entire document, draft new content, and suggest edits — all without leaving the app.

The key detail: every change Claude suggests appears as a tracked change. You can review, accept, or reject each edit individually, just like you would with a human collaborator’s suggestions. Your document’s formatting stays intact throughout.

What You Can Do With It

The most immediate use case is document editing and review. Anthropic highlights legal contract review as the flagship scenario — lawyers can ask Claude to flag risky clauses, suggest alternative language, or summarise a lengthy agreement. But the tool works for any document-heavy workflow: reports, proposals, policies, or academic writing.

What makes this more than just another AI sidebar is the cross-application integration. Claude for Word connects directly with Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint. A single conversation thread can span all three open documents simultaneously. You could ask Claude to check whether the numbers in your Word report match your Excel spreadsheet, or ensure your presentation slides align with the written proposal.

Who Gets It

The beta is available now for Anthropic Team and Enterprise subscribers. You can install it from the Microsoft AppSource marketplace on both Mac and Windows. IT administrators can also deploy it centrally across their organisation through the Claude settings pane for integrated apps.

What This Means for You

This is part of a broader shift where AI tools are moving out of standalone chat windows and into the apps people already use. Instead of switching between Claude and Word, you can now work with AI right where your documents live.
