Google Brings Gemini AI Into Sheets, Docs, Slides and Drive
Google's March 2026 Workspace update adds AI-powered data filling, document generation, and smarter file search across its entire productivity suite.
Quick answer
Google's March 2026 Workspace update adds 'Fill with Gemini' in Sheets (AI-powered data filling that's 9x faster than manual entry), AI document generation in Docs, and smarter file search in Drive. The most impactful feature is Sheets' ability to auto-populate tables by analysing context from existing data or pulling from Google Search.
Google Brings Gemini AI Into Sheets, Docs, Slides and Drive
Google has rolled out a significant Gemini AI update across its Workspace productivity suite, adding new features to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. The update — announced on March 10, 2026 — brings practical AI tools directly into the apps that millions of people use for work every day.
What’s New
The most notable addition is Fill with Gemini in Google Sheets. Instead of manually entering data row by row, you can now ask Gemini to populate an entire table based on context from your existing spreadsheet or by pulling real-time information from Google Search. Google says this method is nine times faster than manual entry for tasks involving 100 or more cells.
To use it, you simply add a new column header — something like “Sentiment” or “Suggested Reply” — and Gemini infers what you need and fills the rows automatically. For example, if you have a column of customer feedback, adding a column called “Praise or Complaint?” will prompt Gemini to analyse each row and categorise it instantly.
Beyond Sheets, Gemini can now generate full documents from scratch in Docs, Sheets, and Slides by pulling together information from your own Google Drive files and emails. Instead of starting from a blank page, you can describe what you need and Gemini builds a first draft using your existing data.
Google Drive also gets smarter search. Rather than relying on exact file names, the AI now understands the content and context of your files, making it easier to find what you’re looking for with a plain-language description.
Who Can Use It
The new features are rolling out to Google AI Ultra and AI Pro subscribers. Docs, Sheets, and Slides support is available globally in English, while the upgraded Drive search is currently limited to users in the United States.
What This Means for You
If you spend time in Google Sheets cleaning up data, categorising responses, or manually enriching tables, Fill with Gemini can turn a tedious 20-minute task into a few seconds of work. The document generation feature is similarly useful for anyone who regularly produces reports, proposals, or summaries from data already sitting in their Google account.
These updates mark a shift from Gemini being a chatbot you open separately to an assistant that’s embedded directly in your workflow. You don’t have to switch tabs or paste content into a chat window — the AI is built into the tools where the work already happens.
